40 Years Later, Al Still Loves This Supper
Do you have one of those old recipes that you've made so many times the card is practically worn out? I sure do.
Sunday evening, with snow falling outside, I pulled out an old Betty Crocker Beef Stroganoff recipe card that I've been using since Al and I were first married, more than 40 years ago.
It's stained, worn around the edges, and has seen a lot of suppers.
But Al still loves his stroganoff, and I don't believe he's ready for me to retire that recipe just yet!

The original recipe calls for steak, but years ago I started using our ground beef instead.
It's quicker, it's easy, and it makes a mighty good supper when you've got other things to do besides stand over the stove.
And I thought you might enjoy it, too.
Al's Favorite Ground Beef Stroganoff

Al likes his stroganoff over egg noodles, but rotini works just fine, too. That's what we had Sunday night.
Here's how I make it. Nothing fancy, just a good, hearty supper that's been keeping Al happy all these years!
Ingredients
- • 1 lb T Bar J Ranch ground beef
- • 1 can (8 oz) sliced mushrooms, drained
- • ½ cup frozen chopped onion
- • 2 cans (10½ oz each) condensed beef broth
- • ¼ cup ketchup
- • 1 clove fresh garlic, chopped, or garlic powder to taste
- • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- • 1 cup sour cream
- • Butter, as needed for browning
- • Egg noodles or rotini, cooked according to package directions
Directions
- 1. Brown the beef. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef. Add the drained mushrooms, frozen onion, and garlic. Cook until the mushrooms begin to brown and the onion is tender.
- 2. Make the sauce. Stir in the ketchup and most of the beef broth, reserving about ⅓ cup. Simmer gently for 15 minutes.
- 3. Thicken the gravy. Whisk the flour into the reserved cold broth until smooth. Stir into the skillet and cook until the gravy thickens.
- 4. Add the sour cream. Turn the heat to low and stir in the sour cream. Warm it through, but don't let it boil.
- 5. Supper's ready! Serve over hot egg noodles or rotini.
Amber's Kitchen Tip: I use frozen chopped onions because chopping fresh ones makes me cry! And don't boil the sour cream. Just warm it through for a nice, creamy sauce.
From our kitchen to yours. Enjoy!
Now, wouldn't it be nice to have a few packages of good ground beef tucked away in your freezer for evenings like this?
You know your household better than we ever could. But if your freezer could use a little stocking up before winter settles in, our 15 lb Ground Beef Sampler is ready to ship.
It's the same beef we put on our own supper table.
Everybody Had a Good Supper Sunday

While Al and I were having our stroganoff, our eight weaned calves were enjoying a good supper of their own.
Montana gave us some snow Sunday, but those youngsters had plenty to eat and a soft, dry place to bed down.
There's something satisfying about getting everybody fed and settled in for a cold night.
One Last Quarter Beef... Maybe!
We're down to the last quarter beef's worth of meat from our fall harvest.
It could go home with one family as a quarter beef share, or we may be able to divide it into two smaller eighth shares.
Either way, we're getting close to wrapping up our fall harvest!
Al and I are grateful for every family who has chosen to trust us with the beef they put on their table.
If you've been thinking about filling your freezer with T Bar J beef, here's another date worth remembering.
November 1 — Reservations open for our summer 2027 beef shares!
And we're making it a real Beef Roundup.
Our Third Annual Prime Rib Customer Appreciation Drawing is back! Al will draw one lucky winner on November 8 and another on November 15. Two Prime Ribs for two different customers.
We're also coming up on another delivery for our Montana 5 for Those Who Served commitment.
Every beef share reserved from our ranch means five pounds of ground beef donated in your name to the Montana Veterans Meat Locker.
Our last delivery was 180 pounds, and we've been adding up reservations since Memorial Day for our next delivery.
Your family gets good Montana beef, and a Montana veteran gets the same, because of you.
And here's something new for this year's Roundup: when you reserve your beef for next summer, you'll also have the option to purchase a Ground Beef Sampler and have it shipped right away.
That way, you can enjoy some good T Bar J beef this winter while looking forward to your summer delivery.
We'll have more details coming soon. For now, just circle November 1 on your calendar so you don't miss out.
Thanks for stopping by our kitchen and ranch today. I hope you find a little time this week to sit down with someone you love and enjoy a good supper together.
Family's the best, isn't it? Glad you're part of ours,
Amber, Al & Fritzie

P.S. If you try Al's stroganoff, I'd love to hear how your family likes it. And if you've got a well-worn recipe card of your own, I'd love to hear about that, too!
