This Week at the Ranch

Ever hear a mama cow bawling at 2 a.m.? That’s how Wednesday started this week.

 

Turns out, one of the calves got pushed into the water trough and couldn’t get out.

 

Our cold well water means danger of hypothermia if they’re in too long. When we went to see why all the racket right after daybreak, we pulled boards, and got the calf out.  

 

Then we drained the tank, gave it a good scrub (he pooped in it, naturally), and got the water trough filled back up.  It is hot out, and no time to be out of water.

 

The calf is doing fine. But here’s the kicker…

 

As the bulls settled in for a morning nap after being up most of the night, the cows decided, as they do, it was time to head up the hill. The bulls looked up with a “you’ve got to be kidding me” look on their face, sighed, and followed.

 

Only to get to the fence line and realize, it was a false alarm. The cows just wanted a change of scenery.  Then they were looking for whoever thought that idea up!

 

Sometimes the bulls’ expressions are the best entertainment we get out here.

 

We have a game camera set up now, so we can take pictures of the water trough to see that it has water in and that no one is swimming.

     

We have also been shipping and delivering summer beef shares this week.  And handing out steak turners and dinner bells to our 5 and 10 year customers.   We see lots of garages, freezers, and extra fun stuff.  Besides our Beef Friends!

And then you never know what you'll find in the garage when filling up the freezer!  Pretty flashy grandparents these two are. Mark and Terri got a steak turner for their 5 years of beef.

 

What's Next?

• Thank you to everyone who supported our 4-H members and joined this year’s Pig Parade.

We’ve got one pig set aside for special offers through the year, so keep an eye out for surprise bacon drops, sausage bundles, and pork chop specials. Because who doesn’t love a little pork now and then?

 

We’re in the thick of summer beef deliveries, but fall isn’t far off, and neither are cooler nights, crock pot meals, and comfort food that warms you to the core. 

 

• Fall Harvest Shares will deliver in October and November. It's the perfect way to stock your freezer before the holidays and enjoy clean, all-natural beef all winter long.  Watch for deposits to open for those.

• The Jalapeño Cheese trail sticks are officially flying out the door, along with our original  Summer Sausage. These are becoming a fan favorite.
