This week was a mix of joy, hard work, and the tough parts that come with ranch life. It’s the kind of week that keeps you humble and grateful, all at once.
Life on the Ranch
The Surprise Calf
We weren’t expecting our first heifer to calve for three more weeks, but Monday morning proved us wrong.
Out in the pasture, L61, gave us a healthy little heifer calf - early, but strong and thriving. Thursday, we brought all the heifers in closer to the house, just east of the buildings, so we can keep an eye on them.
L61 is a good mama, and the little gal is getting around just fine. She kept up real good for the mile walk home. I snapped a picture so you can see her too. We love seeing those strong starts
Vaccination Day & New Adventures
Our replacement heifers got their pre-breeding Lepto shot this week. They’re growing up fast and after a little sorting and going through the chute, they headed right back out to pasture like champs. It’s always good to see them looking healthy and ready for the season ahead.
The Tough Part
Then today came one of the sights I hate most.
When we went out to feed, we found a seven-year-old cow that had delivered twins—a full month early. Both were still, and she was lying beside them, like she didn’t understand why they weren’t getting up.
She had them cleaned off and she had done everything right. But with twins, sometimes things just don’t go the way you hope. It’s called sloughing a calf, and in her case, she lost two. They were too early to survive. It breaks your heart.
That’s the real side of ranching, too. The part no one sees in a grocery store. We carry that weight because we care deeply—for every animal here.
Better News: Found Our Shovel!
In small victories, we also found the long-lost shovel! It had disappeared under the snow 2 months ago, and I’d nearly given up on it. Spring thaw reveals all kinds of treasures!
