From Broken Fence to Pig Parade Week

 

That old homestead sits in the pasture we just moved cows into this last week.

 

Last week didn’t go quite as planned.

 

The deer helped take down part of a fence, and the heifers helped themselves to the neighbor’s winter wheat.

 

We got them gathered up, fixed the fence, and apologized to Weston. Thankfully, the wheat is still small — and he took it in stride.

 

That’s ranch life some weeks.

 

We spent the next couple of days moving cows into fresh pasture — one we’ve been saving all year.

 

Out here, the growing season is short. Grass really only grows from about May 15 to July 1.

 

So we rotate carefully:

1. • Each pasture gets grazed once
2. • Usually less than 3 weeks
3. • Then it rests for the rest of the year

That’s how we keep grass on the ground and protect it from the Montana wind and sun.

 

As of today, everyone is settled, full, and pretty content.

 

Honestly, grass, water, mineral, family, windbreak, and a good back scratcher — that’s about all they need.

 

We’re about 5 weeks out from calving now.

 

We unloaded a ton of pre-calving mineral this week — the girls need a little extra going into this stretch.

 

And yes… we’re still watching for those two sets of twins.

 

Kieran heads to Arizona this week for Nationals.

 

We sent him with a box of beef sticks — and a few extras to share with the other hammer throwers.

 

Simple fuel for long days.

P.S. Sam the bald eagle is back — we saw him out in the heifer pasture hunting gophers this week. And there’s a new pair over on the butte. Watching them fly together is something else.
