I Underestimated the Ghost Pepper
You might want to grab a cold drink before this one.
Â
I learned a lesson from a Ghost Pepper beef stick this week.Â
Sometimes supper starts with a recipe.
And sometimes, it starts with looking at the pot on the stove and thinking...
"What could I add to this?"
Our oldest son, Zach, used to quiz me when he showed up for supper and saw something new.
"Is this a real recipe, or did you make this up?" Â He would ask.
Well... I made something up again this week.
It was a rainy day.
The kind of day that just feels like homemade stew.
The stew was good, but I thought maybe it needed a little something extra.
So I grabbed one of our Ghost Pepper beef sticks.
Cut up half of it.
Sliced it into little pieces.
Stirred it in, and, wowee. 😂
Let's just say Ghost Pepper means what it says.
It added great flavor.
But my eyes were watering.
My nose was running.
And I had to get a glass of cold iced tea to finish my bowl.
So if you decide to try this at home, you have been warned.
Maybe start with a little less.
Or maybe choose a Jalapeño beef stick first.

Â
But that's one of my favorite things about having good food close by.
It doesn't always have to be fancy.
Sometimes it's a pot of stew on a rainy day.
Sometimes it's burgers on the grill.
Sometimes it's a beef stick when you need something quick.
And sometimes, it's a meal you share with someone else.
And that seems to be the theme around here lately.
People sharing food.
A few days ago, I heard from Thomas after his first T Bar J beef stick order arrived.
Thomas said, "I was eating one before the delivery driver got to the end of the road."
That made me laugh.
I think that's a pretty good sign.Â
He also told us he was going to start sharing them with other people.
Â

Â
And then I had another phone call that reminded me why we raise cattle.
Â
A T Bar J family told me about what happened when their family came to visit.
Â
They put our beef on the table.
Â
No big explanation. Just hamburgers.
Â
And the request? More hamburgers.Â
Simple as that. Not a fancy meal. Not complicated. Just good beef around the table.
Now more of their family is filling their freezer with T Bar J beef, too.
That means a lot to us.
Â
Because long before that beef reaches your table, a ranch family was caring for the cattle.
Moving them to fresh grass. Checking water. Watching over calves.
And doing all the little things that happen before a package ever reaches your freezer.

Â
If you've been riding along with us for a while, watching the calves, reading the ranch stories, and wondering if T Bar J beef is right for your family, we'd love to help.
You don't have to start with a full freezer.
Some families start with our Taste the Difference Bundle.
Some start with a 1/8 beef share.
And some are ready to fill the freezer for the months ahead.
We'll help you find what fits.

Thanks for riding along with us each week.
We're sure glad you're here.
P.S. Apparently, our beef sticks are finding their way into lunch boxes, pickups, hiking packs, and now bowls of stew. Just remember, if it's Ghost Pepper, start small.
