Mothers Feed Everything

Calving officially started May 1.

But one impatient mama decided to beat the calendar by a day — and surprised us with a healthy set of twins on April 30.

That was especially welcome after losing a calf the day before.

Right now we’re up to 16 calves, and by the time I finish writing this tomorrow night, I imagine we’ll be closer to 20.

This time of year means checking cows often, making sure every new calf is up, warm, and nursing.

Once they’re a day old, they get tagged with their mother’s number — the start of their own story here at the ranch.

And this week, with Mother’s Day coming, it’s hard not to notice how much of ranch life revolves around mothers.

A mama cow will fight off just about anything for her calf.

Even our resident coyote knows better most days.

He mostly sticks to hunting gophers, mice, prairie dogs, and rabbits, which is just fine with us.

The eagles have been busy hunting, too.

Meanwhile, the replacement heifers and bulls are coasting along peacefully in their spring pastures while most of our attention stays focused on the cows getting ready to calve.

We also spent part of the week fixing water tanks and pipeline leaks again.

Hydraulic cement is still one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen, cement that somehow hardens almost instantly if you can get your hands on it fast enough — even while it’s still wet.

And we finally rolled up nearly two miles of electric fence from the last pasture rotation.

Now the antelope can move through safely again without ducking under the wire — or worse, getting tangled in it.

This ranch keeps us busy. But most of it really comes down to taking care of what depends on you.

That feels especially fitting this week.

So to all the moms out there — Happy Mother’s Day.

Thanks for all the meals planned, the lunches packed, the rides given, the worries carried, and the people cared for every single day.
