Mrs. Spitz Made It Across This Year

Mrs. Spitz Made It Across This Year

Last week, we were just crossing the 20-calf mark.

This week, we’re up to 52 calves born.

So it’s definitely been a Mother’s Day kind of week around here with lots of new mothers — 32 of them, in fact.

That also means we’re about halfway done calving now, which feels like a pretty good milestone this time of year.

Our goal is usually to be around 80% done within the first three weeks, and the cows have definitely been keeping us moving lately.

We had 8 calves born just today.

The bees arrived here this past Saturday, too, which always feels like another sure sign that spring has fully settled in.

Once the bees show up, it seems like everything else starts happening at once around here.

Longer days.
Spring projects.
Calving checks.
More things growing.
More things needing fed.

It was Mother’s Day around here for more than just the cows.

And this Friday, our oldest son is coming home for the weekend to help with calving and spring projects.

Both our boys still come home and help when things get busy around here, and honestly, that’s a pretty good feeling as parents.

There’s always plenty to do this time of year.

Remember Mrs. Spitz?

She made it across the creek to calve this year with no trouble at all.

Last year was a different story.

She got stuck trying to cross in the mud, and Al ended up pulling her calf — Spitz — right there in the middle of the creek and mud.

This spring, the creek is low and mostly dry, so she crossed over easily, calved where she wanted to, and then headed right back to the rest of the herd like nothing ever happened.

Spitz, her calf, is in the steer bunch now and considers himself our right-hand man, making sure everything gets done correctly.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, more beef sticks headed out this week, and more families reserved summer beef and pork shares, too.

We are also shipping out our last bulk beef shares Monday to California.

After that, nationwide shipping pauses until September while warmer weather settles in here, though Montana shipping continues year-round.

We try to ship your beef so it arrives exactly as it should.

We’re currently taking reservations for summer and fall beef shares, and every bulk beef reservation also includes 5 pounds of ground beef donated to the Montana Veterans Meat Locker in your family’s name.

And for families wanting to taste the difference of ranch-raised beef or to start filling the freezer a little at a time, our Taste the Difference bundle has been a popular place to start.

Thanks for riding along with us through another busy spring week.

We are grateful to those of you who keep showing up and want to learn more about how cattle are raised.

Spring always feels a little exhausting and a little exciting all at the same time around here.

But if you want to stop by and see the babies, give us a call and come on over.
