By the time last weekend was over, the chili was gone, they ate all the cookies, and Al's 3rd bag of Halloween candy was history. It was finally quiet once the calves found their mothers and quit bawling.

 

We did more than eat, though.  Got everyone home, cows, calves, heifers, and bulls.  Cows and calves are separated.  That was the loud part.

 

The next day, Dr. Lacey, our vet, was out to ultrasound every cow. She would say:  bred, open, bull calf, heifer.

 

Two cows were called pregnant with twins, so stay tuned next May for that fun!

 

The 5 opens (including Dottie) went to town for the sale, and the heifers will likely join a fall-calving herd.  Hard to see Dottie load up in the trailer.  I will miss her.

 

It’s the rhythm of ranch life, some we say goodbye to early, others we watch grow, and a few surprise us entirely.

 

On Monday, we rolled up two miles of electric fence and moved it over to a section of alfalfa that got hail-damaged last summer.


It’s regrown with all the fall rains and will make good pasture for the cows before winter.

 


This electric fencing is more wildlife-friendly than barbed wire. The antelope ducks underneath it, and the deer jump over it. With both hunting seasons being in full swing, they are looking both ways and always running.

 

The cows hit the road this week, heading for their new alfalfa pasture.  Just a half mile this time and 1 left turn. Didn't even need their Google Maps.
