Someone left the Gate Open . . . and the Steers had a Plan
Some weeks feel like a slow stretch of pasture. This wasn’t one of those.
From loose steers and twin calves to hammer throws and bald eagles — it’s been a week full of energy, motion, and moments worth remembering.
Life on the Ranch
🏅 Kieran’s Big Weekend
Kieran, our T Bar J Ranch Hammer Thrower, is in Tucson this weekend for the U.S. Track and Field Throwing Festival — after placing 8th at the Elite Meet on Thursday! He’s holding steady just shy of his personal record, and hoping to climb a few spots this weekend. It’s early in the season, but he’s chasing a big goal: making the U.S. Team for World Championships. We couldn’t be prouder — and yes, he’s powered by T Bar J Ranch beef.
Powered by T Bar J Ranch beef and chasing a spot on the U.S. team. Go Kieran!
Another Set of Twins
Last week, we had another set of twins — two healthy bull calves. Know what? The same cow has had twins before (heifers last round). She’s building quite the résumé—5 calves in 3 years.
Then, Somebody Left the Gate Open
There’s an old saying in ranch country: Live like someone left the gate open.
Well… this week, someone did. All 40 steers made a break for it — right into the pasture with the first-calf heifers.
They’ve never been around brand-new babies before, so they were sniffing, snorting, tails high, and having a grand old time racing around like a high school pep rally.
The calves, used to their moms quietly licking their faces and calling to them in soft voices, were not sure what to think.
It was a learning experience for all involved, and it took us a solid two hours to get everyone sorted back into their places.
The steers got some exercise (and a bribe of pellets), and the heifer moms are now sticking a little closer to their babies.

🦅 Sam’s Still Here
No sign of the golden eagle this week — but Sam the bald eagle is back.
He was paired up for a few days, but it looks like she’s either sitting on a nest or has moved on.
So we’ll see what happens. For now, it’s just him again, watching from his usual fence posts or atop the cow's windbreak.
Honoring Memorial Day
This weekend, as we fire up the grill and spend time with family, we also take a moment to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country.
Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War, a time to honor those lost.
Today, we’re grateful for their sacrifice — and for the freedom to live and work the way we do. We salute all our military branches and the servicemen and women who make up of.
Many ranchers in our community use "flag" netwrap to cover the big round bales. It keeps all the hay together after it is baled. During haying season, when you drive down our roads, there are 100s of flag bales on either side of the road. Proudly reminding everyone: We are free because of the Brave.
Beef Delivery Season Is Here
If you’re one of our 60 families getting a Beef share this summer, your inbox should have a message from me with all the details.
We’ll be shipping, delivering, handing off boxes, and filling coolers starting June 16th through the end of July, with some road trips to Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota in between.
If you're new here and still thinking about ordering, Father’s Day is coming fast — and there's still time to get a freezer full of beef.
